sitesearch.module (version 1.3)

sitesearch.module is a sophisticated and highly configurable site searching tool which provides both:
  • a highly efficient and effective 'simple' search facility
  • a very capable advanced search facility with full regular expression capability
The 'simple' facility can be implemented as a search box on your main pages; the advanced facility can be set up as a menu item, or, alternately, as an option which is presented at the end of a 'simple' search, in case the desired object was not found by the simple search.

In either case, sitesearch.module can search HTML files (including SHTML, XHTML, XML, ASP, JSP, PHP variations) and MS Office files (DOC, XLS, PPT) on your site and return a weighted search result. By specifying a template page, you can have full control over the appearance of the output page.

The speed of searching has been carefully optimised against the thoroughness; no index is required so your most recent updates to the website are immediately searchable without the need to perform any batch updates. In other words, the Word document which you just added to the download portion of your site becomes immediately fully searchable. Of course, you can choose to exclude areas of your website from the search.

The search pays particular attention to documents' titles, keywords and descriptions and consequently presents a list of documents well-ordered in terms of potential interest.

Individual words can be given greater or lesser importance by prefixing with + or -. A search for an entire, literal phrase is performed by quoting the phrase, e.g. "mule variations" will map only those words, not 'variations on a mule'. Further, from version 1.3 onwards, sitesearch.module also performs stemming, i.e. where a search on "developmentalism" fails, a further search on "development" (the stem) will be performed. This also takes care of plurals, i.e. where a search on "lasses" fails, a further search on "lass" will be performed.

When the initial search is exhausted the site visitor can select 'advanced search' and then he/she will have access to the full power of regular expressions to perform searches, be able to exclude certain file types, control the number of results to return, select whether to search for whole words or partial and control case sensitivity.

You can try out sitesearch.module by searching this site using the search box in the top-right corner of this screen; have a look at the 'advanced' search page which is presented at the end of the matching files listing as well.
